Skyler Derrington, 13-Year-Old Survivor of Texas Flood, Pens “Hallelujah;” Tribute to Beloved Camp Mystic

A young girl who miraculously survived the devastating Texas Hill Country flood earlier this month is honoring her experience-and the community that stood by her-in a powerful and personal way.
13-year-old Skyler Derrington, a longtime camper at Camp Mystic, was among those who managed to escape the rising waters that overwhelmed the cherished summer retreat. The flood, which tore through the region with terrifying speed, left destruction in its wake-but also stories of courage, unity, and resilience.
In the days following the tragedy, Skyler turned to music to process her emotions and honor the place she calls a second home. Drawing from Leonard Cohen's beloved anthem, she rewrote the lyrics to "Hallelujah," crafting a deeply moving tribute to the friendships, faith, and strength that helped her and others endure the storm.
Her version of the song, simply titled "Mystic Hallelujah," has since been shared widely, resonating not only with fellow campers and staff, but also with listeners across the state and beyond.
"I heard the rain, I saw the fear
But love and light still found me here
And in the dark, His hand, it pulled me through ya
We lost so much, but not our grace
We found each other, face to face
And still we sing a Mystic Hallelujah..."
"I wanted to write something that remembered the pain, but also the beauty in how we came together," Skyler shared. "Camp Mystic has always been about love and strength, and this is my way of keeping that alive."
Skyler performed the song during a special community gathering held in nearby Kerrville, bringing tears and applause from families, camp staff, and emergency responders alike.
