iCloud iPhone Service: The Recent Cyber-Attack In China
A cyber attack has targeted the iCloud service of Apple in China, in an attempt to collect the passwords, usernames, and some private information as the company released its newest mobile devices like iPhones in the most populous country in the world.
The technique is called "man-in-the-middle" attack, which lets hackers to intercept the internet traffic between websites and users they're attempting to visit. When such websites are encrypted like the iCloud service of Apple, most browsers will warn the attacks and in several cases will block the connection. Yet, several browsers used widely in the country of China provide little protection.
The attack was first reported by Greatfire, which is an activist group that is known for monitoring internet censorship in China. It was also confirmed by Apple on its support page. Apple issued a statement in Chines and English language saying that they are aware of the attacks through using insecure certificates in obtaining user information and the company also added that they take it very seriously.
The activist group blamed the government of China and said that the attack is the same as the recent attack on several American technology companies like Yahoo and Google. According to Percy Alpha, one of the members of the activist group, they are hundred percent certain.
According to The Washington Post, China denied the responsibility for the attacks. Hua Chunying, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said that she doesn't have information on the said case yet. She also added that China is definitely opposed to any hacker attacks, regardless of its forms, and China is also a major victim of these cyber attacks.
Apple also stated that the attack didn't compromise the iCloud servers of the company and seems to be not affecting the users in some countries. The company also didn't blame the government of China or anyone else for the attack and just provided a public notice to warn their users on how to avoid this attack. iCloud service's security has been a sensitive issue for the company since hackers stole some intimate photos from the Hollywood celebrities' accounts and posted them on the internet.
