'Dracula Untold' Star Luke Evans Talks Being Gay In Past Interview; Is He The First Bisexual Vampire Star Ever?
One thing not many "Dracula Untold" fans are aware of is the fact that its lead star Luke Evans came out as an openly gay more than a decade ago but dated a woman few years later.
With most actors playing the lead role in modern vampire movies and films are straight male actors, Evans may be the first bisexual actor to play the lead role in a box-office vampire movie.
In an interview published on the Sept. 3, 2002 issue of The Advocate, Evans made it clear he is an openly gay man and he has been for many years.
Evans said he said his decision to open about his sexuality was something he had spoken about to many people including his boyfriend at the time, when he just got a straight character role in "Taboo."
From "Taboo," Evans went on to play straight characters in box-office films, such as "Clash of the Titans" in 2010, "The Three Musketeers" in 2011, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in 2012, "Fast & Furious 6" in 2013 and recently "Dracula Untold."
In London, Evans never tried to hide his sexual preference as everyone knew him as a gay man. He said he expected the consequences of being an openly gay man and an actor at the same time, such as having to do interviews with gay magazines.
For Evans, it is important to be open about who he is and not care about people who do not like it as he is not a very good liar. He then cited musician George Michael who hid his homosexuality for so many years but eventually got found out.
"If that means I'm going to be a poor man at 60, then at least I've lived a happy, open, gay life and not had to hide it from anybody," Evans explained.
In 2010, Evans dated publicist Holly Goodchild, who happens to be a former personal assistant to Welsh singing superstar Charlotte Church, Wales Online reported.
At the premiere of Evans' 2010 film "Tamara Drewe," Goodchild said, "Luke's lovely - we're really old friends and it just sort of happened. We are nowhere near engaged but things are really good."
Amid the current box-office success of his vampire film beating "Gone Girl" starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris at the weekend box office, Evans managed to not talk about his sexuality and who is currently dating.
After "Dracula Untold," Evans will star in the 2014 "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and the 2015 film "High Rise."
