Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie Reboot Release Date Announced by Lionsgate Films
With the release of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie reboot, another 90s' favorite will get the same treatment as Lionsgate Films announced yesterday that Saban's live-action children's television series "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" will be rebooted as a movie and will be released in 2016.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series was a huge hit when it came out back in 1993 and even spawned its own film in 1995. The Power Rangers is a group of teenaged high school students chosen to defend Earth from invaders from space who were led by the Empress of Evil, Rita Repulsa. The TV series also became commercially successful with an ever growing merchandise of toys and years of numerous television spin-offs.
As of now, details on the new Power Rangers film are scarce, but it has been reported that 'Thor' writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller will write the script based on a story written by Roberto Orci who is also known for co-writing and producing the 'Star Trek' reboot. The story will now focus on super powered teens who will discover and learn how to control their powers together and will have to work together to save the world. With new technologies in special effects and great writers at the helm, there isn't much to worry about the reboot's future, and it might possibly spawn its own series of sequels; that is of course if it becomes a success in the box-office.
With writers being announced, there is no word yet of who will be directing the new Power Rangers film. Also, no casting details has been released as well.
Lionsgate has a reputation of having a good run on film franchises for the last few years now. The Saw film series, The Expendables, The Hunger Games, Twilight, and Divergent just to name a few of their successful films.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie reboot will hit the big screen on July 22, 2016 and will go head-to-head with highly acclaimed writer and director Guy Ritchie with his film, King Arthur.
