Former Mutemath Drummer Darren King Identifies Himself as a Victim of Michael Tait’s Alleged Misconduct

Darren King, acclaimed drummer and founding member of the alternative rock band Mutemath, has publicly identified himself as one of the victims of Michael Tait's alleged pattern of misconduct spanning over two decades.
In a candid Instagram video posted earlier this week, King shared a personal account of an encounter with Tait that he says occurred approximately 20 years ago during a dinner meeting.
"We were seated at a booth... Michael Tait reached his hand under the table and rubbed my upper thigh and crotch," King stated, recounting the moment that left him shocked and silent. "I didn't say anything. I was in disbelief."
King is among multiple individuals who have come forward, both publicly and anonymously, contributing to recent investigative reports published by The Guardian and The Roys Report. The investigations detail a long-standing pattern of alleged sexual misconduct, grooming, and substance abuse involving Tait, who rose to prominence as a member of DC Talk and later as the frontman of Newsboys.
In his statement, King also offered scathing criticism of the Christian music industry, calling out the systems and individuals who, in his view, enabled Tait's behavior:
"Someone could only engage in this level of predation over this length of time-and avoid consequence-if they had help. And he had a team of helpers. He had a clean-up crew. He had people working to suppress criticism, to dismiss victims, to delete comments, to protect the brand and reputation of a very troubled person."
Michael Tait recently released a statement entitled "My Confession," in which he acknowledged that many of the allegations against him were "largely true," while disputing specific claims. The backlash has been swift. Capitol Christian Music Group has terminated its relationship with Newsboys, and a growing number of Christian radio stations and tour promoters have suspended support for the band.
As the Christian music industry reckons with these revelations, King's decision to come forward publicly marks a significant moment of reckoning and solidarity with other survivors. He has expressed hope that transparency, accountability, and justice will follow.
