CM Punk: Retired (But Is It for Real?)
CM Punk (or Phillip Jack 'Phil' Brooks in real life) retired January 27, 2014, although he still then had until July 17 before his contract with WWE actually expired. In fact, because he was still officially in the WWE roster, fans still entertained some bit of hope that he'd be stepping back in the ring anytime soon. After all, other wrestlers who've retired in the past like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Terry Funk and Bret Hart, eventually returned and got back to work. Many still liked to believe that CM Punk's supposed retirement is just part of the WWE storyline, a gimmick to further spark fans' appetite.
But was it? Apparently not, according to Mike Johnson of PWInsider. He disclosed that "when WWE sources were asked whether there was any change in Punk's status with the company, one source declined to comment, saying, 'I'm not going there' and the other said, 'Nope.'"
CM Punk himself seemed to have confirmed that he is indeed retired and that he enjoys being retired. When asked by RedEye Chicago how it felt to be retired at age 35 and whether he intends to do more charity work now that he is retired, he replied, "It feels good. It's a lot easier when you hook up with organizations like the Cubs and being friends with some of the team members. It isn't hard to support their charities. Plus I get to do fun stuff like bowl and paint chairs and play ball with Bill Murray."
Aside from bowling, playing wiffle ball with Bill Murray and painting chairs for the Cubs, CM Punk said he's been busy binge watching TV (i.e., "I just watched 40 hours of Game of Thrones," he tweeted fans). But won't he get bored with his new lifestyle? Many who wants to see him back in action on the ring would be extremely happy if he does.
