Ex-NBA Star Yao Ming to Buy NBA Team L.A. Clippers?
With all of the controversy surrounding the NBA franchise, L.A. Clippers and their owner Donald Sterling and his lifetime ban, the names for a potential new owner get thrown into the pot daily. One of the latest, is Ex-NBA star for the Houston Rockets, Yao Ming.
ESPN reported earlier this week that he would attempt to put together a group to purchase the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Yao Ming said that was the first he heard of the possibility of him being part of an effort to buy the franchise. "I just heard about it in the morning my time," Yao said Saturday via email. "I really don't know where this news came from." Current Clippers owner Donald Sterling had decided to hand over power to his wife Shelly authorize her to negotiate a sale of the team.
Yao's NBA career got cut short due to multiple injuries to his feet. He is still just a young 33 years-old and has been studying economics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and has been heavily involved with NBA Asia, various philanthropic projects and his Yao Family Wines winery in Napa, Calif. He purchased the Shanghai Sharks in 2009.
Yao is the first NBA star to come from China and his popularity in his home country was a huge reason that the NBA has gained in such popularity in that part of the world in the last 10 years. He is one of the NBA's biggest global ambassadors for the game today.
