"God's Not Dead 2" Hits Theaters & Newsboys Talk About the Soundtrack
New faith-based movie "God's Not Dead 2" hits the big screens this weekend (April 1). The movie features Melissa Joan Hart as Grace Wesley, a high school teacher who, by answering a student's question, gets sued by sharing her belief in Jesus. Apart from Hart, the film also stars Jesse Metcalfe as defending attorney Tom Endler, Fred Thompson as a senior pastor, Hayley Orrantia as Brooke Thawley, Robin Givens as Principal Kinney, Sadie Robertson as Marlene, David A. R. White as Reverend Dave, Ray Wise as prosecutor Pete Kane, Ernie Hudson as Judge Stennis, Paul Kwo as Martin Yip, and the Newsboys as themselves.
The story is situated in Martin Luther King Jr. High School, where the beloved teacher Grace Wesley helps her students understand and enjoy history. Her love of teaching, her love for her students, and her love of life all come from the same place: her love of Christ. So when Brooke, a hurting student grieving the loss of her brother, reaches out to Grace, their coffee-shop conversation naturally leads to Grace sharing the hope she finds in Christ. When Brooke later asks an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, Grace's reasoned response lands her in big trouble-almost before she even finishes giving her answer.
With the principal and superintendent joining forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her the career she loves and expel God from the classroom-and the public square-once and for all!
GOD'S NOT DEAD 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved Pure Flix movie from 2014 and features an all-star cast. Now in theaters, GOD'S NOT DEAD 2 has audiences standing proudly for what they believe ... while they still can. Where will you stand?
Contributing to the new movie's soundtrack is Newsboys' new single "Guilty." Newsboys vocalist Michael Tait told Billboard how the song came about. "They did ask us to write a song for the second movie and we had a bunch of songs that could have probably been the song, but we landed on 'Guilty,'" Phillips said of the song, which the Newsboys perform during the film during a climatic scene. "It really does fit in really well with the theme of the second movie, [saying] basically 'If doing right is wrong, we want to be guilty.' I think a lot of people had a little bit of trouble understanding that from the beginning because most people are like, 'I don't want to be guilty. I'm innocent.' So I think there was a little bit of confusion at radio with this song initially but now that the movie is out, it's going to make it all make a lot more sense."
Tait agrees the single was perfect for the new film. "We were very excited about the success of the first movie and part 2 is even better," he said. "It was bone-chilling better. I actually teared up a couple of times. When the song 'Guilty' comes in, it was so perfect. The song says, 'I'm a Jesus Freak. I believe what I believe and if doing the right thing is considered wrong, I'm guilty.'"
