Brandon Camphor Shares His Excitement Over "I Choose You," His New Album & More
Brandon Camphor & OneWay's new radio hit "I Choose You" is already rapidly climbing up the Billboard Gospel chart. A Washington, D.C. area native, Camphor formed OneWay in 2007 with singers Angela Jones, Julia McMillan, and Fred Cleveland. Their debut album "Regeneration" was released in 2009. With Pop-flavored shades of rock and funk, the inspiring songs of faith and worship included fan favorites "It's Possible (Gotta Have Faith)" and "Bless the Lord." The closing song "One Way" explained the group's name and mission: "One way to live the life," they sing. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! I'm gonna live for Christ. He's the way, the truth, the light."
The group won Music World Gospel and The Gospel Music Channel's "The Most Powerful Voices Competition" in 2011 and in 2012, Camphor launched the "Jesus Rock: Live It Loud" college tour that found OneWay touring with Tye Tribbett, Kierra Sheard and Group1Crew. Camphor has also been a soloist on the Grammy Award winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's "Love Lead The Way" and "Pray" albums. In 2014, OneWay hit the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart for the first time with the track "You Are God." OneWay is now putting the finishing touches on its sophomore album "Hope Is Alive" that is tentatively scheduled for an autumn 2015 release.
Hallels: Congratulations on the success of "I Choose You." Did you expect the song to be so successful? Why did you choose this song as your new single?
Thank you so much for the congratulations. I'm so excited about our latest single "I Choose You." I can't say that I expected it to be successful because I know there is a lot that goes into making that happen but I certainly was hopeful when I decided to make it a single.I knew this song had a message that could relate to anybody. We've all, believers and unbelievers, have had moments where we've had to make key decisions in our lives and the choice to choose Jesus was thebiggest one for me. That's also apart of the reason why I chose the song as a single. I think in the days we are living in there needs tobe more declarations of why Jesus is the right choice to make ineveryone's life. He's the way the truth and the life and people need to know!
Hallels: How's your new album coming along? When do you expect "Hope is Alive" to drop?
I am so excited about our new album "Hope is Alive." It will be releasing in the third quarter of this year and I absolutely can't wait. The good news is that It's completed. All the songs are recorded and are currently being mixed and mastered. We're so close to releasing it to the world and trust me no one is more excited than we are!
Hallels: Who are some of the producers, guest artists and songwriterson this new album that you're working with?
I worked with amazing producers on this record. One of the primary producers is a newcomer to this scene named David James. He's based out of the Washington, DC area and he produced our current single "I Choose You" and is responsible for a lot of the songs you'll hear on the record. Other producers include great friends of mine such as Freddy Washington Jr, Justin Savage, Joshua Davies, and BruceWashington, Jr. Almost all of the songs are written in house by myself and the members of One Way but I was able to make a few collaborations with other writers such as Leah Smith and William Demps. There are some really special songs on this album! I think people are going to enjoy it from beginning to end.
Hallels: When you started to sing for the Lord, I believe, you werevery young, how did you realize God's call for you to sing?
I grew up serving in my church and was involved in the music ministry at a very young age and matured in my faith walk very quickly. it was always spoken over me that I had anointing on my life and myself and as I continued to mature in the things of the Lord I began to realize he had a plan for my life bigger than my own. I feel fulfilled from serving in ministry and every time I sing for Jesus and that feeling I feel has never left. I see the fruits of what comes from the using my gifts advance the kingdom and I am committed to spreading the gospel of Jesus across the world.
Hallels: How did OneWay come about?
Myself, Fred Cleveland, and Angela Jones have known each other foralmost 15 years now. Wow, time flies!! We attended high school together in Washington DC and that's where I journey began. After we graduated from high school we reconnected and decided partner inministry as we realized we had the same interests musically and spiritually. Julia McMillan later joined our team completing the formula that is now known as Brandon Camphor and OneWay.
Hallels: Over the years of ministry, what's the greatest blessing and the greatest challenge in being a Christian artist?
I would say one of the greatest blessings of being a Christian artistis seeing lives changed and unbelievers come to know Jesus. That is the reason why we do what we do. Creating awesome music and selling albums is great but letting people know about the love of Jesus and this Savior who came to rescue them from their sin is what it's all about. I would say one of the challenges is actually keeping that atthe center of what we do. Because we are part of an industry that praises talent and gifting it sometimes can get easy to get caught up in the "hype" and lose focus. I constantly have to remind myself that only what you do for Christ will last and winning lives to Jesus has eternal value that seeing our name in lights does not.
