Lonnie Hunter “#GETITDONE” Album Review

Prime Cuts: Forever I Will, You're My God, My Tribute
Procrastination has met its nemesis with Lonnie Hunter's Tyscot Records (Casey J, Rance Allen Group) release #GETITDONE. This brand new live recording isn't just your average worship record. Rather, this is an album of songs with messages that point both vertically and horizontally. Not only does Hunter pushes us not to procrastinate in the giving of our worship to God, but this album also brims with lots of wizened practical nuggets of how to live lives as God's kingdom builders. Thus, #GETITDONE is conterminously spiritual as well as practical. Recorded live, the songs here range from full-fledged Gospel choral pieces to smooth R&B Christian jams to more contemporary soul-accentuated pop offerings.
Hunter is a Stellar award nominated artist, and he has had recorded three albums with The Voices of St. Mark on the Malaco Record Label with hits such as "Even Me" (the drip drop song), "Let's Dance", and "There's Power In His Name." For four years Hunter was also the host of the #1 Gospel Radio Show in Chicago, ruling the morning drive time. Now a resident of New Jersey, he serves as Pastor of Worship at Bethany Baptist Church, a 26,000 member Mega Church in Lindenwold, NJ, where Bishop David G. Evans is the Pastor.
Aficionadas of Sunday morning choir-fronted tunes will adore "Devotion." Never one to pander, the briskly flowing melody of "Devotion" is gorgeously augmented by some delightful Stevie Wonder-esque harmonica quips. "Devotion" is destined to be a choir favorite across churches in no time. The stirring orchestrated sounds backed by the gorgeous grand piano sounds provide the perfect setting for Hunter's faith-affirming spoken intro of "Forever I Will," a song that ranks loftily with some of Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir best works. Not to be missed is the heartfelt ballad "You're My God." Featuring a Yolanda Adams-like soprano on lead vocals, she certainly has the vocal prowess to move the hardest of souls to Christ.
As a tribute to the late Andre Crouch, Crouch's "My Tribute" gets a teased out rousing treatment. Addressing the horizontal plane where Hunter takes on more of a preacher stance is the title cut "#GETITDONE." Calling us to get back in the race of serving Christ, "#GETITDONE" finds Hunter half speaking and half rapping through this funky choir-backed piece. "In Your Face," a love song from Hunter to his wife, suffers a little from the date Jack Swing 90s production that sounds a little out of place. Nevertheless, "#GETITDONE" is still a stellar effort -- one that offers some heartfelt worship to God that ought to satisfy both who like their Gospel traditional and contemporary and it's also an album that gives direction to us on how we can be better stewards of God's kingdom.
