Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Release Date Moved Forward; Gunn to Introduce Another Guardian from the Comics, Guardians to Crossover with Avengers, And Other Rumors
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 release date has been changed from July 28, 2017, to May 5, 2017, according to an official Marvel Studios announcement. The sequel this year's highest grossing superhero film will be written and directed by James Gunn, who also co-wrote and directed the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. According to Russ Burlingame at Comicbook, all of the principal actors playing the titular Guardians will return, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Josh Brolin is also expected to return to reprise his role as Thanos bit it isn't clear whether Karen Gillan's Nebula will return or not.
Gunn has already begun working on the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. On his August 3 Facebook message, he said in part, "I've spent this weekend hard at work on the sequel. I couldn't help myself! The results are nice but it's really the creative process I love and that keeps me going. I'm on fire with this thing! The Guardians have so many hardships and heartaches and triumphs ahead of them, and I can't wait to share them with all of you. ... Onto week two..." Of course, it's way too early to expect a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 trailer since Gunn is still at the script-writing stage. However, there are already several Guardians of the Galaxy 2 rumors that are making the rounds of the sci-fi and entertainment circuit. Gunn himself started it when he told reporters that "at least one more Guardian from the comics" should appear in the sequel. The other Guardians in the comics are Moondragon, Major Victory, Cosmo the Spacedog, Jack Flag, Adam Warlock, Bug, Mantis and Quasar. Could it then be Adam Warlock? At the post-credit scene of Guardians 1, it was shown that Warlock's cocoon at The Collector's ship has already been opened. On another occasion, Gunn also confirmed to Yahoo that he has been discussing a potential Avengers and Guardians crossover with his Marvel bosses. Said he, "That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they're pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other." There is indeed much grist for the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 rumor mill.
