‘Deliver Us From Evil’: An Encounter with the Dark Powers

'Deliver Us From Evil': An Encounter with the Dark Powers
"Deliver Us From Evil" is a supernatural horror movie directed by Scott Derrickson, who once scared moviegoers on "Sinister". This latest film from the veteran director is based on Ralph Sarchie's memoirs. Ralph Sarchie, who is played by Eric Bana, is a former NYPD cop who devoted his time and effort fighting the supernatural. In the movie, Ralpth is so dismissive regarding the idea of ghosts and demons, until he had the chance to meet a few of them face-to-face and had encounter with the powers of darkness.
In one interview, the director, who also co-written the screenplay for the movie said that he was very compelled to create the film because he's very fascinated and thrilled with the idea of a cop having seen some of the worst that humanity can offer, which is to have an encounter with different kinds of paranormal evil.
Olivia Munn plays the role of Jen, Ralph's wife and Joel McHale plays the role of Butler, Ralph's partner. The movie also stars Edgar Ramirez who plays the role of Mendoza, a priest who tries to convince Ralph that all his recent cases cannot simply be written off as human nature.
While the paranormal or supernatural side of the movie suffers a few flaws, its central conflicts actually work. Ramirez, who is shaggy enough to become an exorcist but show calm wisdom rather than an obsessive determination, makes faith to Divine powers look cool. The seriousness of his character enables the desire of the film to dig deeper into the climatic exorcism. Sean Harris, who is threatening as a possessed man also deserves a credit in the movie.
At the end of the film "Deliver Us From Evil," it was revealed that Ralph Sarchie then joined forces with Edgar Ramirez, the unconventional priest to fight against the demonic and frightening demonic possessions that terrorize the city.
It is of note that the character of Father Mendoza in the film was based on two-real life individuals, Father Malachi Martin and Bishop Robert McKenna who were both Ralph Sarchie's mentors. The actors in the film "Deliver Us From Evil", Olivia Munn and Eric Bana were also allowed to watch the real exorcism video tape from Sarchie's files.
