True Detective Season 2 to Consist of 8 Episodes; Nic Pizzolatto to Continue as Showrunner and Sole Writer; Colin Farrel and Vince Vaughn Confirmed for Casting

The True Detective HBO TV series Season 2 release date will likely be on "June 21st, 2015, plus or minus a week," according to HBO Watch. Filming for the True Detective Season 2 TV series begins later this fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO programming director Michael Lombardo said: "We're going to start shooting in September for it to air next summer. [It has] different characters, a different setting. It's set in California, all of California. There are three cops. One of the characters is female. I think that's probably all I'm allowed to say. We'll probably be announcing casting soon." According to Entertainment Weekly, it has been confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season.

True Detective Season 2, unlike the first season, will be structured as an anthology. Also unlike Season 1 which has Cary Fukunaga as sole director and actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey playing the leads for all of its eight episodes, True Detective Season 2 will have different stories involving different characters with different directors and different casts per episode or sets of multi-part episodes. TheTrue Detective HBO Season 2 TV series will however continue to have Nic Pizzolatto as its showrunner. Of him, Lombardo said, "When you have a success like True Detective it's challenging, less for us and more for someone like Nic, how to face the page again and start afresh and not be haunted by the success of the show you've just done. But the writing is better than last season. It's exceptional." True Detective Season 2 will have eight episodes and the first two will be directed by Justin Lin according to Entertainment Weekly.

In related True Detective Season 2 news, according to Screen Rant, Pizzolatto revealed more: "Right now, we're working with three leads... The characters are all new, but I'm deeply in love with each of them. We've got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months." Previously, Pizzolatto told Hit Fix that True Detective Season 2 will be about "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system." According to TheWrap, the second season "will follow the death of a corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought." Satanic symbols will be found carved into the dead man's chest, suggesting that he may have been involved with the occult movement during that period in America's history.
